Founded by Melanie Bush in 2010, Better Bookkeepers has grown from a solo operation to a thriving team of 19 professionals, with a commitment to providing financial clarity and organization to local businesses.

The company offers an array of services, from month-to-month bookkeeping to cleanup work for businesses needing to prepare for tax season.

Bush began her journey into bookkeeping in college, while working with the National Association of Women Business Owners.

“I got to know a lot of female business owners and I started helping them two to five hours a week doing what we do now, just on a smaller scale,” Bush said.

Better Bookkeepers’ approach is client-focused, ensuring businesses receive services that align with their needs rather than a one-size-fits-all model.

“We really tailor everything to the client,” Bush said. “We don't expect our clients to fit into our mold. We change to fit their mold.”

A hallmark of Better Bookkeepers is its emphasis on relationships and reliability. Clients benefit from a robust support system, with every account overseen by multiple team members to ensure accuracy and continuity.

“When my second daughter was in the NICU, I still had to process payroll for a client,” Bush said. “It was just me, and there was no backup. I never want a business owner to feel like their operations are at risk due to someone’s personal emergency.”

In addition to helping with finances, the company is focused on impacting others. Better Bookkeepers participates in local initiatives, such as serving as a drop-off spot for the Montgomery County Food Bank and supporting scholarships for young parents through Women Who Rock, an event hosted by the United Way. They are also active in the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce and other regional organizations.

“Positively impacting people in business, giving back and being involved is something that is vitally important to us,” Bush said.

This dedication extends to fostering a supportive workplace culture, particularly for women balancing career and family. Bush said many individuals in the bookkeeping field are young mothers or women re-entering the workforce. She said she takes pride in providing them with opportunities for both professional and personal growth.

“It’s important for women to have something outside of their kids or families that allows them to grow emotionally and professionally,” Bush said.

As Better Bookkeepers celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, the company’s leadership has shifted to a trio of women: Melanie Davis, Director of Business Development; Crystal McPhie, Director of Intentional Operations; and Cindy Polio, Director of Client Services. Bush said each started as a “baby bookkeeper” and advanced under her mentorship.

“I'm excited to see what happens over the next five years,” Bush said. “We've grown in ways that I never imagined over the last five years.”

With its combination of expertise, community focus and a commitment to its clients and team, Better Bookkeepers continues to set itself apart as a trusted partner for businesses.
