Collin County Area Realtors is hosting its second Roadmap to Homeownership event Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 6821 Coit Road, Plano.
Attendees will receive presentations from experts on mortgages, titles, home warranties and inspections. The event is sponsored by the North Texas Realtors in Action Foundation. Roadmap to Homeownership is free to attend, but registration is required.
“A first-time homebuyer would be really well served at this event,” Communications Director Bri Westbury said. “Throughout the morning, they'll get a presentation from each specialty about what that part of the journey to homeownership entails.”
In addition to these presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the experts in a relaxed setting.
“Attendees can ask ‘What's pre-approval?’ and ‘What does a down payment look like?’... all that stuff that you wish you could ask an expert in a no-pressure situation is what this is for,” Westbury said.
One of the event's goals is to dispel common misconceptions about homeownership, such as the belief that a 20% down payment is always required.
"A lot of people delay talking to a lender because they think they need to have everything figured out first," Westbury said. "But there are various down payment options and even assistance programs that a lender can help you explore."
Attendees will also learn about the practical aspects of the homebuying process, including what to expect from a home inspection and the importance of understanding the closing process.
“This event is a great no-cost, no-risk event,” Westbury said. “You can just come learn and see what you might be missing. [Buying a home] is not something where you walk into a house and automatically it's yours. There are things that have to happen throughout the contract in order to protect your interest and the seller's interest. We realized a few years ago that we were in a really unique position to offer that advice to the community with no strings attached.”
In line with the event's theme, Westbury said attendees can expect "road trip snacks" and a family-friendly atmosphere.
