As someone who grew up viewing dentistry as something painless and fun, Dr. Greg Holbrook wants to bring that idea to marginalized communities.
Dr. Holbrook owns Prairie Creek Dental, located at 457 W. Main St,, Lewisville, and has spent over 20 years practicing dentistry. The practice goes beyond just typical dental procedures like fillings and crowns, offering services such as veneers, implants, root canals, bone grafts and IV sedation.
The love of dentistry started when he was a child, as his grandfather was a dentist. Dr. Holbrook grew up around dentistry and was always intrigued by the idea of starting his own practice.
“He encouraged me to pursue a career in dentistry,” Dr. Holbrook said. “He was kind of my mentor and idol growing up. He was my own dentist until he retired at the age of 76, and it was always fun going up to visit grandpa and grandma. He worked on my teeth and made dentistry fun. It was always a fun visit; it wasn't scary.”
As a way to give to underserved areas, Dr. Holbrook has embarked on multiple mission trips to places such as El Salvador, Guatemala and China throughout his career to serve communities that don’t have access to dental care. His most recent trip took him to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
The mission trip was hosted by Ayuda Humanitarian and the Dominican Starfish Foundation. On the trip, Dr. Holbrook was able to do dentistry for four days, hand out food packs and donate money to help the community. On average, he saw around 20 patients each day.
“We were mostly doing either fillings or extractions,” Dr. Holbrook said. “There wasn't much sophistication in the treatment; it was mainly getting people out of pain because they have no access to dental care in their community, nor do they have the financial means to get dental care in their community.”
Through providing these treatments to patients who would be unable to receive them otherwise, Dr. Holbrook is sharing his knowledge to those who truly need it.
Dr. Holbrook enjoys the relationships that develop during the service he gives, with both patients and other doctors. He plans to continue to serve other communities as often as he can.
“There's so many people that you're able to help, and they're just so grateful,” Dr. Holbrook said.
