Leadership Prep School is a K-12 public charter school located at 8100 Teel Pkwy. in Frisco. The school accepts any students from any district that touches Frisco ISD.
“A charter school is a free public school,” Chief Academic Officer Audra Floyd said. “We have a charter with the State Board of Education. The biggest difference between a charter and a regular ISD is funding. Charter schools are still accountable to the state the same way an ISD is in including standardized testing.”
With the upcoming fall semester, Leadership Prep School is doubling down on teaching soft skills to their students. Starting in kindergarten and going all the way up to 12th grade, the school has streamlined the things they teach.
Soft skills taught include:
- How to appropriately ask for a break if they need one
- How to use a calendar
- How long to study for a test so that they're able to manage their schedules
Another aspect that helps prepare students for either college or trade school is the internship program that Leadership Prep School offers.
Starting in eighth grade, students are required to have 60 hours of an internship in order to graduate by the time they reach 12th grade. In eighth through 10th grade, the students are either bussed to the internship or the businesses come to school. During 11th and 12th grade, students do job shadows at local and international companies.
Companies interned at include:
- Toyota
- Jamba Juice
- Gearbox
- Southwest Airlines
- Credit Union of Texas
Starting next school year, Leadership Prep School is starting a partnership with Collin College where starting in ninth grade if students complete the program, they will graduate with an associates degree. University of North Texas will also start offering dual credit courses in project-based learning for 11th and 12th graders.
