While many things have changed in the seven and half decades since the agency’s founding, some things haven’t changed at all, like how the agency approaches each policy with trust, respect and dedication to providing the service they’ve become known for.
In a Q&A with Community Impact, CEO Robert Nitsche shared more about the company's success, values and mission.
Congratulations on 75 years in business! What is your secret to success?
Nitsche: The secret for us has really been our people. Getting the right people makes a big difference. We’ve put together a great group, and we've had lots of wonderful people come through the agency and be a big part of that. One of our employees just retired at the end of last year after 49 years with our agency. She was a really big part of everything we’ve done, and that’s something you can’t take a short-cut to. At the end of the day, our people determine our success. We have relationships with both clients and carriers that go back decades, and it’s because of the care our people provide and the relationships they have helped cultivate.
What are the benefits of working with a family-owned insurance agency?
Nitsche: I believe consistency is the biggest thing we offer our clients. As a family-owned business, we have a consistent group guided by a consistent set of beliefs, core values and level of service. Oftentimes, bigger companies have CEOs and executives who come and go. We don't have that here. We have relationships with both clients and carriers that go back decades, and have been able to watch our clients grow. We've had several employees celebrate their 50th work anniversary here.
My father and grandfather promoted much of the family culture and values that we still run on today. Two of my kids are now in the agency, and it's important for me to continue to teach them the culture. I talk about our values, explain the importance of why we do what we do and how crucial that is to our clients and our agency.
What are your family values?
Nitsche: We really try to promote being respectful to each other and being professional. You also need to be trustworthy. Even though it’s not one of our mission values, you need to have empathy, because you need to understand where the customer is coming from. And of course, there’s hard work. Living up to those standards can be tough, but we work hard to live up to them.
As far as our culture, we try to strike the right balance between hard work and moments of fun. We actively cultivate a workplace where our employees are not only productive but also happy and engaged. We all work hard, and it can be stressful— being able to let loose even for just an hour makes a difference, and it brings us closer. We recently had a “Dress Up As Dad Day” to celebrate Father’s Day. We had a great turn out, and employees dressed up in tribute to some iconic dad style— long white socks, shorts, the works.
Having my kids here to experience that part of our agency is really important to me. I want them to understand the unique thing we have here. This is who we are, and I don’t want to change that.
What sets your business apart from other insurance agencies?
Nitsche: You have to take care of your employees if you expect them to take care of the customer. While we strive to really push to take care of our customers, if we don't take care of our employees first, they're not going to be able to do that. I think that's one thing that sets us apart—our focus on taking care of our employees— so they can provide the level of service, empathy and professionalism we expect.
What’s one thing you want your clients to know about working with your company?
Nitsche: One thing we talk a lot about with our salespeople is that when we're working with a client, we're going to do it the right way. It's not always the cheapest or the easiest, but it is the right way, and at the end of the day, that’s what will make a difference with them. Some people will cut corners, but that's not the way we do things here. We're going to do it the right way.
We have relationships with both clients and carriers that go back decades because of that. It builds a relationship of trust knowing that we will do the right thing. We're very thankful to our clients—past, present and future—that enable us to get to this milestone. Additionally, the insurance companies we work with have made a difference in getting us to where we are today. They allow us to offer great products to ensure our clients are taken care of.
