Having a trusted real estate agent can ensure a smooth home-buying process. The Spencer Team is a team under real estate company RE/MAX, formed in 2018 by Melissa Spencer and her husband Doyle, serving the north Houston area. Since forming, The Spencer Team has seen much success and is one of the top teams at RE/MAX.
Community Impact sat down with Melissa to discuss how she got started, real estate trends and advice for first-time home buyers.
How did you get started in real estate?
Spencer: I started practicing real estate in 2016. I started with a small boutique brokerage in The Woodlands and in 2018 I realized I needed to move to a bigger brand and get to a place where I had more opportunity to grow. In 2018, I moved over to RE/MAX Integrity. At that time, my husband, Doyle, left the world of commercial construction and joined me in real estate. That's when we formed The Spencer Team. We aligned ourselves with RE/MAX just because of their brand recognition and culture.
What drew you to real estate?
Spencer: I love helping people. Seeing them get through a stressful period of life and helping them do it as smoothly as possible was really appealing to me.
Tell us more about The Spencer Team.
Spencer: Our licensed agents are me and my husband, and three additional agents. Our agents serve our clients start to finish on all aspects of their transaction whether buying or selling. I think that's more important for building relationships with our clients. I was inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame in 2020 and have been a five-star realtor since 2021. The Spencer Team has been the Top Producing Team within RE/MAX Integrity for the last three years and is a Titan Club team.
What is acreage property and how does the team specialize in it?
Spencer: Acreage neighborhoods are one-to-five acre lots that people come in and build their homes on. Typically they're very custom homes. They have their own set of unique things like septic being on site. We can really assess the lot and where the house sits and how to get that property to be their dream property with all of the components they want.
What real estate trends are you seeing this year?
Spencer: More and more sellers who may have bought their house or refinanced during the low interest rate time during the pandemic are finally to the point where although they love their interest rate, the house just doesn't work for them anymore. More homeowners are listing their homes and more buyers are getting to the point that they're okay to buy at a higher rate knowing that if and when rates go down, they can refinance.
What advice would you give to first-time buyers?
Spencer: Who you work with matters. It's just like anything else in the world: you get what you pay for. Being with RE/MAX, we have a focus on education and always growing and learning to be the best professionals that we can be. Make sure you're using an experienced agent, somebody who's gone through the trenches with lots of different kinds of transactions and has the resources to get you to the finish line and someone who's going to care about your experience.
