Alliance BJJ Martial Arts & Fitness Pearland provides holistic approach to Jiu Jitsu

As one of the largest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu facilities in the Pearland area, Alliance BJJ Houston Martial Arts & Fitness, located at 8498 S. Sam Houston Pkwy. E., Ste. 1800, Houston, has made a name for itself since opening in 2015.

What sets the gym apart from other martial arts gyms is its holistic approach, emphasis on safety and large facility with multiple class offerings.

A holistic approach

Unlike other gyms where students might come to learn how to fight, Alliance BJJ Houston ties in all aspects of life into their training.

“It's a little bit of a misconception that our goal is to teach you how to fight,” Owner Danny Duckworth said. “Like I tell my students, it's a perk of what we do, but our main goal is to teach you yourself. Teach you what you're good at and what you're bad at. Where do you rise and where do you fall? And really try to work on that internally.”

To make sure students are staying healthy in all corners of life, the gym offers a sauna, a small weight room, recipe guides and even a budgeting class to help with their finances. All of this leads to making sure students are accountable, which is one of the five core values Alliance BJJ Houston focuses on.

The gym’s core values are:
  • accountability
  • making a difference in people’s lives
  • staying community based
  • education
  • longevity
“Our job is to keep you healthy,” Duckworth said. “Your kids depend on it. Your community depends on it. You depend on it.That longevity, that education system, that community, that accountability, it's all about raising the standards for our youth because they're the ones we're guiding into our future.”

An emphasis on safety

One of the fundamentals for Alliance BJJ Houston is putting safety at the forefront of everything the gym does. To keep everyone safe, no one is allowed to walk in off the street and start training.

New students go through a two-hour-long orientation where they learn the basic movements, get registered in the system and receive a health assessment. Before being placed in their first class, instructors answer any questions and go over the schedule.

After that, the very first class students are placed in is the fundamentals class. With cushioned matts and well-trained instructors, students will feel safe and guided throughout the entire process, whether in a beginner or more advanced class.

“We really hone in on the beginner process,” Duckworth said. “We want to make sure that you understand how the system works, but also, you can know confidently that you're going to be safe and that you're going to be built up the right way through the fundamental system.”

Class offerings

Not only does Alliance BJJ Houston offer the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but the facility also offers other unique class offerings.

Programs offered include:
  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu all levels (kids and adults starting at age 3)
  • Kickboxing or Muay Thai
  • Yoga
  • Group fit camp classes
Alliance BJJ Houston tries to cater to those in every stage of life by offering multiple different days and time slots. The schedule is constantly changing but Duckworth said he promises morning classes as early as 5:00 a.m., a lunchtime slot and night classes that go as late as 8:30 p.m, six days a week. “All the different types of people and professions that train in our academy such as first responders, stay-at-home parents, health care workers, lawyers, business owners, teachers, college students all have one thing in common: be better than yesterday and become leaders to their peers,” Duckworth said.

All of the classes are mixed gender except for two women’s only classes each week. The only age separation is between the kids and adult classes, and kids are observed by instructors to determine when they should be moved up into the adult classes.

“Our facility is designed to keep you healthy, to keep you safe and to keep you from getting injured,” Duckworth said. “It's the way I designed the mats. I designed the process and I designed the program itself.”
