Located at 345 Landa St., Das Rec offers gym equipment, personal training, a lap pool, an indoor track, pickleball courts and youth sports camps.
“We like to say that we have something for everybody,” Recreation Services Manager Stephanie Chelar said. “We have your typical cardio and weight machines and free weights. We have a gymnasium where we can do basketball, volleyball, pickleball and futsal, which is indoor soccer. We also offer child care on site so there's no excuses as to why you can't get your workout in.”
The 77, 000 square-foot fitness center also offers group classes such as:
- barre
- beginner’s yoga
- chair yoga
- cycle strength fusion
- pilates
- zumba
- aqua boot camp and more
Summer is one of the busiest times at Das Rec with youth sports camps. This year the center will offer basketball, volleyball, soccer, pickleball and cheer camps. Das Rec staff are partnering with iCode to host a computer coding robot camp for children and teens who want to exercise their minds.
Chelar said Das Rec staff like to emphasize that physical fitness can look different for everyone and doesn’t have to be boring.
“You can go play pickleball for an hour for your cardio,” Chelar said. “You don't have to get on the treadmill. Do something fun. Make it enjoyable. Make it something that you're going to stick with.”
Das Rec is available for all members of the New Braunfels community. Chelar said she sees moms carrying infants walking on the indoor track and active older adults using the facility too.
The fitness center offers several different membership packages for residents:
- A family membership costs $57 a month.
- An individual membership costs $35 a month.
- A youth or senior membership costs $24 a month.
Das Rec also offers a scholarship program for individuals who want to exercise but cannot afford the membership fee.
“We take applications in April and October for a discounted membership based on income,” Chelar said. “We have that opportunity for people who feel like they might not get a chance to give [Das Rec] a try.”
Das Rec is open Mon.-Fri from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“It's really important to take care of yourself first so you have the energy to take care of others, whether that be a spouse, a family member or a kid,” Chelar said.
