Stacey Moses along with her husband, Brent, and parents, Don and Liz Loocke, own Kilwins Katy Mills and the Kilwins Sugar Land locations. Stacey and her family are planning to open a second Katy location at LaCenterra in mid-December.
What makes it unique
The confectionary store has been in business since Don and Katy Kilwin founded the company in 1947. Stacey said many people who come to the store see signature treats, like the Superman ice cream, and it reminds them of being a kid on vacation with their families. This nostalgia enhances the customer experience.
“We want to be part of families making memories and history together,” Stacey said.
The Kilwins team pays attention to small details to make the experience of walking into a Kilwins location memorable.
“We want [customers to enjoy] the sight of everything, the smell of the delicious chocolate, waffle cones and caramel cooking,” Stacey said. “We’re trying to create a holistic experience.”
In addition to giving customers a great experience, Stacey said the products at Kilwins make it stand out.
“I think our products are special,” she said. “They're made in the US with the finest quality ingredients. We take a lot of pride in what we do.”
Must-try menu items
“Ice cream is our number one [best seller],” Stacey said. “Once people have our premium ice cream they keep coming back over and over again.”
Kilwins offers over 30 flavors of ice cream. Guests can enjoy ice cream in a cup, waffle cone or as a milkshake. Stacey said the most popular flavors are sea salt caramel, toasted coconut and cookies and cream.
Other unique flavors include:
- Superman: a mix of fruit-flavored pink, yellow and blue ice cream
- Kilwins Tracks: vanilla-flavored ice cream with chocolate-covered peanut butter truffles and swirls of chocolate fudge
- Blueberry Waffle Cone: blueberry-flavored ice cream with blueberry sauce, blueberries and chocolate-covered waffle cone pieces
- New Orleans Praline Pecan: praline-flavored ice cream with praline pecans and a rich caramel
“Caramel apples are a big seller for us because not that many people make them down here,” she said. “We make the caramel in store in a copper kettle and it really adds a lot of flavor to it.”
Community involvement
Stacey said she and her family love the Katy community. Stacey and Brent grew up in Katy and graduated from Katy High School.
She said Kilwins works with local Scout Troops and elementary schools, giving them fundraising opportunities. Kilwins also donates empty ice cream buckets to local schools for
music class, master gardeners clubs for planting and anyone else who asks.
Community involvement is important to Stacey and she hopes Kilwins plays a role in community members’ lives.
“We really want to be part of the community wherever we're at,” Stacey said. “When you're sad and you need a pick-me-up, you come to Kilwins; When you're happy and you're celebrating something, you come to Kilwins.”
Kilwins has played an important role in Stacey’ life as well. Her children, who are 9 and 12 years old, have started helping out at the store. She said it’s special to have three generations of her family working together at Kilwins.
