With multiple locations scattered throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Texas Paint was started in 1947 and has been serving the area ever since. What makes it unique is that it is strictly a paint shop—all it focuses on is paint, unlike some other big name competitors.
“We're not a hardware store. Our focus is color, service and decorative kinds of items,” executive general manager Joseph Long said. “The biggest unique thing about our business is that we're locally owned, and we're also an independent, so we're not we're not owned by any particular brand.”
Though Benjamin Moore is the flagship brand, being independent allows Texas Paint to be able to carry specialty items and be open to a broad spectrum of products.
Their unique services
Along with a wide range of products, the business also offers the following residential services:What really sets Texas Paint apart is the dedication to color. Described as “the kings of color” by Long, the business is well-known for how in-depth its color matching is, and for how it achieves hard to match metallic or decorative finishes.
Every single employee is put through a rigorous training on color matching, which ensures that no matter which employee helps a potential customer, they’ll get the same expertise from person to person.
“We don't rely on just one or two people in the store to have that expertise. We try to train everyone from our managers down to our part time sales associates to learn how to Match Color,” Long said. “They know how color works, how to do certain colors when you're trying to match a color and what colors kind of work together.”
Picking the perfect color
When a first time customer walks into the store, they are immediately greeted by an employee, who then begins a personalized conversation with them as they walk through the basics of picking out new wall colors or wallpapers.
According to Long, some of the questions customers are asked include:
- Do they have kids?
- Are they looking for something that's really scrubbable?
- What are they painting?
- Are they going from a dark color to a light color or light to dark?
- What's their budget?
- Are they trying to get away with one coat of paint or two?
For Long, one of his and his wife’s favorite colors is White Dove by Benjamin Moore because it’s a timeless color that also happens to be the main color for multiple Texas Paint locations, including Long’s recently opened neighborhood location in McKinney.
Giving back to the community
To help celebrate their local contractors, Texas Paint hosts professional vendor shows twice a year, usually in October and April. This allows the vendors to showcase their latest and greatest products to their loyal customers. The event usually also has food trucks, live music and raffles.
They also have more micro-events for individual stores, where customers can enjoy free breakfast and see the newest products demonstrated for them.
“When customers walk into our store, we want them to know that what they bought is the best product for what I'm looking to do because of the value in the service that the store gave to me while I was in that location,” Long said.
