“I have a very deep passion for helping, teaching, and tutoring students. This passion is reflected in my hiring, ensuring I onboard staff who feel the exact same way and who have the energy I'm looking for, because I want students to ultimately feel comfortable,” Neeley said.
Neeley, being 24, is able to relate to the struggles that his pupils are going through and can use his own experience to help calm their nerves.
“Being able to relate to them in that way is very helpful. It enables them to ask questions like, ‘What was that like? What was your score? How did you do? What do you recommend?’,” Neeley said. “It wasn’t very long ago when I sat down for tests like the SAT, the ACT, and the GRE, or was in college classes, so I totally understand where these students are at.”
Atlas Tutoring's round-the-clock availability
Atlas Tutoring stands out by offering tutoring sessions at all hours, ensuring that learners receive support even in the early morning.
“To my knowledge, we are probably the only tutoring company in the entire Sugar Land and Houston area open past midnight. As a night owl myself, we accommodate students at late hours, even as late as two, three, or five in the morning,” Neeley said. “This availability is particularly helpful for college students dealing with late-night studies, presentations, or papers due to procrastination, a common occurrence in college life.”
Neeley founded Atlas Tutoring as a countermeasure to the generalized, one-size-fits-all approach prevalent in large tutoring companies. Prioritizing a specialist model, he ensures that all Atlas tutors are experts in their respective fields, focusing specifically on either math or English subjects to hone their areas of expertise.
“I believe our approach sets us apart,” Neeley said. “In this model, each tutor has their specific areas, such as math, science, English, or computer science, in which they have considerable expertise. This method prevents the deployment of generalist tutors—those who claim expertise in multiple areas, making it hard to be genuine subject matter experts.”
Tailoring services based on industry experience and customer needs
Atlas Tutoring stands out by offering assistance in a broad spectrum of subjects. The tutoring services offered recognize that individuals often need assistance with specialized subjects beyond math, English, and test preparation.
“Many assume tutoring is confined to math or English, but you can find tutoring in a broad array of fields. For instance, most of my one-on-one tutoring experience is in political science,” Neeley said. “I market a range of subjects intentionally to make people aware that help is available across different subject areas,” said Neeley. “I don’t want anyone to struggle through a class thinking they are alone. There’s assistance available for a myriad of subjects, and acknowledging this can make all the difference.”
Much of what is implemented at Atlas Tutoring is a result of years in the industry, recognizing its issues. Many of the unique elements of Atlas are responses to the practices of other companies. Atlas Tutoring offers both hourly rates and pre-paid packages, allowing payment flexibility for the customer.
“The reason I emphasize hourly rates is because it compels me and my staff to continually prove our worth every session. If we don’t deliver, clients can simply pay their bill and leave. I don’t want anyone to suffer through a session, feeling trapped because they paid in advance,” Neeley said. “I offer packages at a discounted rate compared to individual sessions, respecting that some clients prefer that, having had negative experiences with packages. Hourly payment is always an option, with no advance payment required, except for pre-paid packages.”
Adapting methods for each student
At Atlas Tutoring, Neeley champions the adoption of flexible tutoring strategies to suit the varying needs of students, especially when it comes to test preparation.
He recognizes that some students are proactive, utilizing tutors as a resource for questions and conducting most of the studying independently, while many others, less acquainted with standardized tests, may need a more structured approach due to their limited familiarity with exams.
“The stress-free approach comes from how I evaluate students and how we work with them throughout the entire process,” Neeley said. “The way I approach standardized testing is that I break down literally every single type of question on the test and I can help create a study plan that students request. I track all their practice test scores and provide an Excel sheet that includes a whole bunch of data on it that really helps them see where they're at.”
