The backstory
Owners Dennis and Sonja Johnson said they chose Grapevine because it’s a magnet for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Grapevine is close to the DFW airport, centrally located and has many festivals and events throughout the year that bring visitors to the city.
“All of those things indicate that people are coming to Grapevine and they will continue to come, so that's why we really wanted to focus on that area,” Dennis said.
Sonja said that Bohemian Bull isn’t only for tourists. As they looked at potential locations, she and Dennis noticed that people who live in Grapevine had been there for a long time.
“We felt there'd be a strong sense of community that we could tap into and really provide something different for the people who live in Grapevine,” Sonja said.
On the menu
“Our specialty is burgers,” Sonja said. “That's really what we're known for. We grind our meat fresh every day in the kitchen. It's a combination of chuck and Angus brisket, so it gives that sort of dimension to the flavor.”
The menu features a variety of options, but here are three can’t-miss specialty burgers:
- That’s My Jam Burger featuring bacon jam, pepper jack pimento cheese and a fried green tomato
- Black and Blue Burger which has a blackened burger, jalapenos, bacon jam, blue cheese, lettuce and tomato
- Gettin' Smashed Burger which includes two burger patties topped with American cheese, pickles, thin sliced onion and burger sauce.
“Our appetizers are also really unique and tasty,” Sonja said. We have fried green tomatoes, a brussel sprouts dish that has pimento cheese on it and macaroni and cheese bites that are decadently delicious.”
Craft beer and cocktails
Bohemian Bull offers 24 beers on tap. Sonja said they tried to stay local to Texas with their beers. The menu includes Deep Ellum brewery, Cowtown Brewery, Grapevine's own Hop and Sting Brewery and Eight, former Dallas Cowboys player Troy Aikmen’s beer.
For customers who would rather have a cocktail, Sonja said the restaurant offers gorgeous craft cocktails that are really unusual.
The cocktail menu includes a Key Lime Butterfly Margarita made with Los Sundays coconut blanco tequila, key lime juice-infused butterfly pea flower, cream of coconut, rimmed with graham crackers and butterfly pea flower.
A welcoming atmosphere
When Dennis and Sonja first looked at the building that would become Bohemian Bull, it had been vacant for years and was very dark, Dennis said.
“That was the first thing that we wanted to remedy,” Dennis said. “We put in completely glass doors so that there's light coming in at all times. We kept the colors fairly light and bright.”
In addition to brightening the space, Dennis and Sonja also installed a glass garage door that opens up to a patio so customers can dine outside when the weather allows.
“We want our customers to come in and feel like they're welcome here,” Dennis said.
The owners wanted the restaurant’s name to be reflected in the decor as well.
“Bohemian refers to the unexpected or the unusual,” Dennis said. “We have these beautiful chandeliers that Sonia picked out. People don't expect those and yet they love them because they're not expected.”
This distinct environment is what sets Bohemian Bull apart from other restaurants in the area. “There's a uniqueness that you wouldn't find in just a regular pub,” Sonja said.
