“The level and quality of care that we give to our patients is reflected in the feedback we receive,” said Lauren Adetunji, Howerton Eye Clinic’s Healthcare Project Manager. “The patients say we give them the best eye care, that our doctors and staff are very professional. We are very knowledgeable, keeping our patients' needs in mind and our doctors actually listen.”
After more than 40 years of serving patients in Kyle and South Austin, the practice is putting down even more roots in the community with the construction of a brand new building in Kyle. Set to open this November, patients will continue to receive top-notch care at the new location, which will be a two-story, 20,000-square-foot building.
“We’re really excited to continue serving the families of Kyle,” Administrative Director Melissa Cortez said. “Kyle has been great to us, and we’re excited to own our building there and have an even larger presence in the community.”
The upscale location will offer a variety of services from its optical, where clients can purchase glasses and contact lenses; to its practice, where comprehensive eye exams, minor procedures and LASIK are performed under the care of Dr. Kristen M. Hawthorne, Dr. Scott Kelly and Dr. Nadja Torres. All three of the doctors at Howerton Eye are ophthalmologists, meaning they are physicians medically trained to diagnose and treat all eye and visual problems including vision services [glasses and contacts] and provide treatment and prevention of medical disorders of the eye including surgery.
Additionally, ophthalmologists are trained to perform more detailed testing on the eye and retina. This can lead to determining if a patient has other issues like diabetes or heart disease, which means a visit can potentially be life-changing.
One of the most in-demand surgical procedures completed by the ophthalmologists at Howerton Eye is cataract surgery. Cataracts, which are a natural lens in the back of the eye, get harder with age and begin to turn yellow. During surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with a new standard lens that gives patients the ability to see clearly at a distance, or patients can opt for a new premium lens, which allows them to see clearly at all distances, even in dim lighting.
“It's quite an experience for many older patients because they haven’t been able to see clearly for a long time,” Adetunji said. “It gives them a completely new outlook.”
While cataract surgeries are common with patients ages 60 and above, Howerton Eye offers LASIK procedures for younger patients. Howerton Eye even offers Cataract and LASIK Self Tests on their website for patients wanting to find out if either procedure is right for them.
Once patients are deemed eligible for LASIK surgery, the procedure itself can be scheduled and performed at the new Kyle office. The procedure helps treat patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, giving them a new life with clear vision.
Howerton Eye’s slogan of “Experience you can clearly see,” is on display as the clinic’s doctors are continuously honing their craft and earning industry-wide respect. In fact, two of them are Super Doctors, which is a listing of outstanding doctors from more than 40 medical specialties who have attained a high degree of professional achievement. Nominees must meet a high standard of quality care and ethics guidelines to be considered.
“Our doctors Dr. Kelly and Dr. Hawthorne are Super Doctors, which is kind of a big deal. It’s an award given out to the best doctors based on a nomination received by their peers,” Adetunji said.
All of this experience and dedication to quality care from the staff at Howerton Eye has led to patients raving about feeling heard and understood. Each physician takes every patients’ needs into consideration during their visit, addressing all medical complaints and concerns.
“We have a team who takes the time to listen to you, which allows them to give you proper care,” Adetunji said.
