Over the last 26 years, Dr. Jennifer Buchanan of Buchanan Orthodontics has provided patients with beautiful smiles while also supporting the local community in any way she can.

Dr. Buchanan has been committed to supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Collin County through her Shoes for Smiles program. Over 40,000 pounds of shoes and clothing have been recycled and 1,000 pairs of shoes have been provided to the Boys and Girls Club kids to start a new school year.

"We started our Shoes for Smiles drive in 2014," Dr. Buchanan said. "My patients bring in old shoes and clothes, and we have those items recycled, then we use the funds to buy new shoes for the Boys & Girls Club."

This fall, Dr. Buchanan was honored for her Shoes for Smiles program work during the annual Boys & Girls Club Gala, which returned after being canceled the past few years due to the pandemic. Buchanan received The Great Texan Award on Oct.15 at this year's event, which honors someone who has made a difference to the organization.

"It's a big honor. I was humbled and overwhelmed with emotion. I want to make a difference in people's lives; the Boys and Girls Club is such a positive environment for the kids," Dr. Buchanan said. "If somebody believes in you, then you can achieve anything in your life. I'm blessed to help these deserving students."

In addition to giving back to the community through her nonprofit and charity work, staying up to date with the latest orthodontic technology for her business is another priority for Dr. Buchanan.

"Since we use the latest orthodontic technology, we don't have to extract teeth, send patients for jaw surgery, use expanders or Herbst appliances, or wear the crazy headgear I had as a child," Dr. Buchanan said. "It's so awesome. We have Damon Insignia customized braces where I scan a patient's mouth and custom design each smile. It's like custom shoes made for each tooth to create each patient’s winning smile.”

Buchanan Orthodontics offers Spark Aligners for those who want functional and cosmetic bites without braces. Spark Aligners have a new material that is more comfortable and helps the teeth move faster.

"It's been amazing what we are seeing, how quickly and gently the teeth move," Dr. Buchanan said. "I always like to stay on the cutting-edge to make treatment more comfortable and faster for my patients. "It's not just about looking good and functioning well, it's about your overall health. The mouth is the window to the rest of your body. I love being able to help my patients live their best healthy lives.”

Dr. Buchanan said she has been blessed, and she wants to pass that on to the next generation.

“My family, office team and patients have been very supportive, making all of this possible. “I dedicate this award to them,” she said.

Along with her patients, Dr. Buchanan said she has enjoyed watching McKinney grow while maintaining its small-town charm over the years.

"Some of my very first patients are now married and have kids who need braces, so I'm treating the second generation. It's very exciting," she said.
