Since 1954, medical imaging practice ARA Diagnostic Imaging has served the Central Texas community by diagnosing diseases and ailments through imaging, performing minimally invasive procedures, and providing a compassionate, patient-first approach.
“If it’s the right thing for a patient at the right time, we strive to make it happen,” ARA Diagnostic Imaging CEO Craig Cunningham said. “If you spend much time around ARA, you will learn very quickly that it’s very patient focused.”
ARA provides advanced diagnostic medical imaging such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET/CT and more in its 17 outpatient clinics and also services 22 Austin-area hospitals. Aside from diagnostics, ARA physicians conduct minimally invasive procedures for issues such as prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, uterine fibroids and varicose veins.
“With health care right now, it’s not an easy space to be in. But radiology in particular is a really fun field for people that want to be in health care, that may not want to work on the clinical side,” Cunningham said. “We take care of really sick patients on a daily basis, and to get to see them improve with some of our interventional and molecular radiology procedures. As a support team to expert physicians, our jobs are very rewarding.”
Currently, ARA has about 65 job openings. Radiologic technologists are in the highest demand—specifically MRI technologists and mammography technologists—but there are also opportunities for paramedics, EMTs, schedulers, insurance specialists and front desk administrators who are looking to use their talents for meaningful work.
“It’s really steeped in a culture of being centered around a big family, your work family,” Cunningham said. “You spend more waking hours at work than you do at home, so we strive to make the employees that we have feel part of the team.”
Cunningham said one thing all ARA employees have in common is a sense of pride for their work, and it is not uncommon for ARA employees to have a tenure of 25-30 years. With the help of its robust training department, recent high school or college graduates can start at entry-level positions and have ample opportunity to move forward in a prominent career path.
“We’re always looking for folks that want to advance in their career,” Cunningham said. “We have opportunities to start on the ground level and move up into the organization. We have training that helps provide and facilitate growth in your career. We really want people to come and stay a long time.”
ARA currently has over 1,000 employees who love what they do for several reasons: work-life balance, career development opportunities and playing a part in helping community members every day. Some positions offer remote and hybrid options, and ARA Hospital Relations Associates have a seven day on, seven day off option that may soon be expanded to other titles.
ARA also prioritizes employee feedback by conducting town halls each quarter to make necessary changes. Its yearly “Bright Ideas” program collects concepts and suggestions from employees to ensure workflows are running at peak performance.
Working in an ever-advancing field, Cunningham said it is impossible to get bored as an employee at ARA—calling it a space where medicine, the art of medicine and technology meet on a daily basis.
“Radiology finds itself as a specialty in medicine at the epicenter of the care pathway,” Cunningham said. “If you walk into a reading room where a radiologist is reading, you’d think you were at NASA. It’s truly where tech and medicine collide, and that’s not changing. Our field is advancing.”
Right now, ARA is offering sign-on bonuses of $5,000 and a relocation bonus of $1,500 for CT, MRI and mammography technologists. New EMT and paramedics employees receive a sign-on bonus of $2,500, and X-Ray technicians are being offered a sign-on bonus of $2,500 and a relocation bonus of $1,500.
“Come and explore and see if it’s a fit. It’s always worth a conversation,” Cunningham said. “We invite people to come to our website, look at our career board and see if there’s something that is intriguing to them.”
