Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant, who played at The University of Texas for one season in 2006-07, is scheduled to visit the IDEA Rundberg Academy and College Prep campus, 9504 N. I-35, today.
The charter school is hosting Durant, a seven-time NBA all-star, because the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation is partnering with BBVA Compass to build an outdoor court at the school, said Taylor Nichols, principal of IDEA College Preparatory Rundberg, in an email.
Construction of the new gym facility is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, according to an IDEA representative.
According to the NBA's website, the 6-foot-9 Durant was named the league’s most valuable player in 2014, and he was a member of the 2016 U.S. men's Olympic team that won gold in the Rio de Janeiro games this summer. His foundation aims to enrich the lives of at-risk youth from low-income backgrounds through educational, athletic and social programs, according to a KDCF news release.
Durant is expected to speak to IDEA students about the importance of the project and what it means to give back to the community. He will also be on the court with a few students, play the game knockout and announce Nike gear giveaways, the IDEA representative said.
According to its website, IDEA Public Schools is a "growing network of tuition-free pre-K to 12th-grade public schools serving more than 30,000 students in 51 schools across Texas," including locations in Austin.
IDEA Rundberg opened in 2015 and includes classes for kindergarten through third-grade and sixth- and seventh-grade students.
Shortly after his visit to IDEA Rundberg, Durant is scheduled to speak at The University of Texas campus at 4 p.m. today for a virtual Q&A session.
