All eyes were on Alamo Drafthouse Cinema yesterday when a sexist email published on Austin Mayor Steve Adler's personal website berated the theater's decision to hold a women-only screening of the film "Wonder Woman." In his response, Adler admonished the author of the email, calling his views "an embarrassment to modernity, decency and common sense." The Austin movie theater chain is well known for its fondness of themed, albeit sometimes less controversial, film screenings or "movie parties." Here is a selection of some of the signature series events hosted by Alamo Drafthouse.

Afternoon Tea

Baked goods, finger sandwiches and organic tea are included in the price of a ticket to an Afternoon Tea movie event, in which period films featuring "gorgeous costumes and posh British accents" are shown, according to Alamo Drafthouse's website. Previous Afternoon Tea movies have included "Little Women," "Sense and Sensibility" and "Anna Karenina."

BIRTH. MOVIES. DEATH. PRESENTS

This ongoing series is dedicated to experiential movie screenings featuring exclusive content, bonus features and collectible souvenirs, according to the theater's website. Held at theater venues throughout the country, the first presentation in the series is the "Jaws on the Water" event, which is returning for its third year at Volente Beach at Lake Travis. Throughout the month of July, weekend "dive-in" shows will include screenings of "Jaws 2," "Jaws 3D" and "Jaws: The Revenge." Guests can watch the movie from a keepsake inner tube and will be treated to a fireworks display and full access to Volente Beach attractions, such as the Lazy Lagoon, the Sidewinder, the water slides and more.

Dance Party

The Drafthouse is transformed into a dance club during this ongoing series event, in which viewers are treated to a compilation of music videos celebrating past decades, favorite artists and genres, and a variety of props, including glow sticks and confetti. Specialty cocktails are also served. Dancing in the aisles is welcomed and encouraged, according to the theater's website.

Food & Film

A full menu is offered at any Alamo Drafthouse screening, but the Food & Film series takes the experience one step further by offering a themed meal to match the film. Chefs on staff create special gourmet menus made-to-order for classic films. Drink pairings are also offered. Past highlights of the series include the "Lawrence of Arabia" Five Course Feast, the "Casablanca" Moroccan Feast and the "Lord of the Rings Trilogy" event, which featured a nine-course meal to coordinate with Hobbit meal times.

Girlie Night

"Slumber Party" movies are the focus of this ongoing series at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which celebrates the "much loved but often neglected" genre of films, according to the theater's website. Movies such as "Dirty Dancing," "Pretty in Pink," "Clueless" and "Empire Records" are among the lineup of regularly screened films. More recent chick flicks such as "Mean Girls" and "Amelie" also make an appearance. Special cocktails are also offered.

Tough Guy Cinema

The drafthouse recently expanded its repertoire of movies shown at this regular series event, featuring classic action films from the '80s and '90s such as "Escape from New York." Tough guys in the vein of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Charles Bronson and more can be found in the latest slew of films offered as part of the series, the theater's website said.

Video Vortex

Movies that were only released on home video or never released at all are given their time on the big screen during this ongoing series, which according to Alamo Drafthouse, brings back obscure and bizarre films from the "fringes of the universe."

Master Pancake

The pairing of questionable movies with live comedy promises to be "smart, fast and bust-a-gut funny," according to Alamo Drafthouse. Previous Master Pancake features have included the "Twilight" saga films, "Labyrinth," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "The Matrix." The next Master Pancake is a showing of "Forrest Gump" on June 2-3 and 9-10 at the Ritz location in downtown Austin.
