Austin Airport remains open amid winter conditions; delays reported

The Austin airport will remain open during wintery weather impacting the metro Jan. 21.

There are currently some delays being reported by airlines, according to Samantha Rojas, a spokesperson for the airport. Those with flights may find more information on the airport’s online flight board here. The delayed flights will be in yellow.

Rojas urged travelers to stay informed on their flight status by using their airline’s mobile app, monitoring their email or calling them; and then, if their flight is confirmed for a departure, travel with caution as roadways and highways in the Central Texas area may be slick with ice.

Behind the scenes

At the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the Department of Aviation oversees preparations across airport property, including roadways, runways and the terminal. While airlines handle aircraft de-icing, airport teams focus on mitigating ice buildup on walkways, roadways and runways, according to a recent update from ABIA.

Runway closures are exceedingly rare, the update states. The only recent instance occurred during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, when more than 6 inches of snow—rather than ice—accumulated on the runways.
