Kyle City Council to hold special meeting Aug. 22 to call $297M road bond for November election

Following discussion regarding roundabouts and preliminary engineering reports, Kyle City Council postponed the ordinance calling for the $297 million road bond on the November ballot at a meeting Aug. 16.

This could be the second road bond in the city's history and calls for almost 16 miles of new, reconstructed or widened road projects throughout Kyle. Two of the projects call for roundabouts along Center Street, at Burleson Street and Veterans Drive, which the council is opposed to.

"I've gotten the feedback, and I'm sure the rest of the council has gotten the same feedback; and it's my own opinion, as well, that [the roundabouts] just don't fit," Mayor Travis Mitchell said. "I just want us to be clear with the public that we're not going to put those roundabouts there because it could start us off on the wrong foot."

The plans for the roads in the potential bond have multiple design alternatives, which can include roundabouts; it is up to the council to decide which design they would prefer for the bond, city engineer Leon Barba said.

Council Member Yvonne Flores-Cale suggested holding off on placing the bond on the November ballot and waiting until an early 2023 election as some changes still need to be made before the Aug. 22 deadline to call the election.

Ultimately, the council directed staff to remove the roundabouts from the Center projects, which may end up lowering the amount of the bond.

In order to meet the deadline to call for the election, the council will hold a special meeting Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, located at 100 W. Center St., Kyle.
