Austinites can now fly directly to Anchorage, Alaska. The new nonstop destination from Alaska Airlines will begin service from Austin to Anchorage on June 12 and will operate once weekly on Saturdays through Aug. 7.
The details
This is the latest domestic expansion for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, announced on Oct. 27. The new destination is also the only nonstop connection between Central Texas and the state of Alaska.
“Bringing a new state into the [ABIA] nonstop network is a meaningful milestone for our airport and our region. This route gives Central Texas travelers a direct connection to Anchorage and the incredible experiences that await in Alaska, while creating new opportunities for tourism, business and stronger connections between our communities,” ABIA CEO Ghizlane Badawi said in a news release. “It also reflects the strength of our partnership with Alaska Airlines and the continued growth of AUS as a gateway connecting Central Texas to more destinations across the country and around the world.”
Zooming in
Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and a gateway to the Kenai Peninsula, offering travelers access to Alaska’s state and national parks, outdoor adventures and Denali, according to a news release.
“Our ambitions are global, but our foundation remains the same. From the beginning, Alaska Airlines has connected communities across Alaska, the West Coast and beyond,” Regional Vice President of Alaska Airlines Marilyn Romano said in the release. "From Anchorage to destinations around the globe, we’re building on that legacy and giving our guests more ways to explore with Alaska Airlines.”
Put in perspective
Multiple new nonstop destinations have recently launched at ABIA including a new nonstop route to San Jose, Costa Rica on Southwest Airlines beginning in March, as previously reported by Community Impact.
ABIA is currently undergoing an expansion project to accommodate passenger growth. In October, airport officials broke ground on a temporary midfield concourse, as previously reported by Community Impact.
Just this year, multiple months have broken airport records for busiest of all time in terms of passenger volume. June was the airport's busiest month of all time, as previously reported by Community Impact, and July followed in second place.
