Buda council to consider potential futsal amenities

Buda residents may see expanded opportunities for a soccer variant growing in national popularity. The Buda City Council will weigh in on increasing opportunities for futsal with immediate programming options or future development at a March 24 meeting.

Some context

Futsal is a version of soccer played on a surface similar in size to a basketball court. The sport, invented in Uruguay in 1930, can be played indoors and outdoors, according to U.S. Futsal.

Futsal is commonly used for youth skill development due to its fast pace and dependence on ball handling. The sport is played in over 100 countries by more than 30 million athletes, according to agenda documents.

Buda FC, a soccer team that participates in a number of local tournaments, previously played in a winter 5v5 futsal league at Sonny G Academy in Austin.

The overview

City staff will present the council with two identified locations that could support the sport. Buda has a large number of young families, youth sports participation and a growing population, making it an ideal location for futsal amenities, according to agenda documents.

The council will consider bringing futsal to Stoneridge Park as a neighborhood-level amenity, expanding recreational programming in a growing area. The addition would have a minimal impact on current large-field athletics and support a demand for active recreation, according to agenda documents.

City staff identified the City Park Pavilion area as another potential futsal location. The area would provide a central option for futsal programming, casual play and community events.

The variety in futsal play surfaces allows for efficient use of facilities, including courts in gymnasiums, outdoors and on multiuse spaces, according to agenda documents. Expanded futsal offerings could generate revenue through youth leagues, adult leagues, tournaments and camps in the city.

Buda could receive a grant for futsal facilities with a 20% city-funded match. The grant would be facilitated by the Verde Pitch Alliance, an affiliate of Austin FC and 4ATX.
