As work on the I-35 Northeast Expansion continues, drivers can expect lane closures and the end of a long-term closure during the week of Jan. 19-25.

What to expect

The long-term closure of the right lane on southbound frontage road from FM 3009 to Schertz Parkway will conclude after Jan. 25.

The section of I-35 from FM 3009 to FM 1518 will have the following lane closures throughout the week:
  • Jan 19-22: There will be a closure of three main lanes, the exit ramp and entrance ramp of northbound I-35 from Evans Road to FM 3009 for barrier work. Work will also be done on three southbound main lanes, the exit ramp and entrance ramp from FM 3009 to Schertz Parkway.
  • Jan. 21: The left lane of the northbound I-35 main lanes from Loop 1604 to FM 3009 will be closed.
  • Jan. 22-25: The right lane of southbound frontage road from FM 3009 to Schertz Parkway will be closed for pouring flatworks
Alongside closures from FM 3009 to FM 1518, there will be 16 construction related closures from FM 1518 to Loop 1604, including northbound lanes, southbound lanes and the frontage roads. An additional 16 closures are planned for the interchange at Loop 1604 and I-35.

Going forward

The I-35 Northeast Expansion Central project, also called I-35 NEX Central, is expected to be completed in 2027, meaning drivers will experience additional weekly closures over the next two years.

While the project will feature numerous lane closures and detours, multiple long-term closures are scheduled to be completed Feb. 3, including:
  • A full closure on I-35 northbound collector exit ramp and left lane closure on I-35 northbound frontage road from Pat Booker Road to Loop 1604 for bridge work.
  • The entrance ramp closure from Shin Oak Drive to Pat Booker Road for bridge work
  • A left lane closure on southbound frontage road of I-35 at Crownpoint Drive for construction work
Following the completion of the I-35 NEX Central project, the final two projects under construction will be the I-35 NEX South and NEX North. Both are anticipated to be under construction until mid-2028, according to plans from the Texas Department of Transportation.
