On June 21, the city of Schertz celebrated the grand opening of the first segment of the Great Northern Trail.
The first section of trail is about half a mile in length, running from Schertz Parkway along Wiederstein Road.
According to Schertz, the entire Great Northern Trail will stretch 8 miles and connect Schertz Parkway to Cypress Point, linking trail systems at various city parks.
The project is anticipated to cost around $3.7 million, which is to be paid for through grants and other funding sources.
Design on the next trail section is already in the works with the entire project estimated to be complete over the next decade.
