Schertz City Council approved an amendment to its contract with Schertz EMS on Aug. 19. The city will be giving an extra $405,132 through fiscal year 2027-28, the remainder of the Schertz EMS contract.

Additional staff compensation, new personnel and legislative changes have all impacted the Schertz EMS budget. The estimated FY 2024-25 shortfall for the organization is $300,879, according to agenda documents.
The organization provides and organizes on-call medical services and transports for Northeast San Antonio cities, as well as Guadalupe County, Comal County ESD 6 and Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph.
Schertz EMS Director Jason Mabbitt said the average response time on calls in Schertz is 8.3 minutes.
Cost to the city
The city contributed $791,273 in FY 2024-25, according to agenda documents. Like Selma, Schertz chose an option to increase funding by 35% for FY 2025-26, followed by 5% increases in FY 2026-27 and FY 2027-28.
The other option provided by Mabbitt was to increase by 20% in FY 2025-26 and 2026-27, followed by a 5% increase in FY 2027-28.
Contributions will increase to over $1.19 million in FY 2027-28, according to agenda documents.
