Waste Connections Area Manager Jason Rowe and City Manager Wayne Reed updated council on cart distribution and household hazardous waste pickup during a June 10 Cibolo City Council meeting ahead of the July 28 transition.
Services are set to begin after the expiration of Cibolo's current agreement with Republic Services of San Antonio. Reed said Waste Connections will distribute residential waste and recycling carts between July 7 and July 21. Republic Services will begin pulling its residential carts July 8 as Waste Connections distributes its carts. All residents will be automatically enrolled in the new waste service.
In case you missed it
Cibolo City Council approved a five-year term and one five-year extension with Waste Connections for waste services April 8. The agreement raises residents’ monthly bills from $16.95 to $21.89, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
Solid waste and recycling pickup will be once per week, with brush and bulk pickup up to 3 cubic yards per household happening once every two weeks.
According to agenda documents, household hazardous waste pickup, which adds $1.50 to the monthly residential bill, will be once every 30 days. Reed said residents will be able to contact Waste Connections and the service will deliver a bag along with a date to leave the bag of hazardous waste materials outside.
“You don’t have to wait for once every six months roughly [for spring and fall cleanup days], wait in a line; we think this is a concierge type of service for household hazardous waste,” Reed said.
Acceptable hazardous waste materials include household chemicals and cleaners, automotive products, consumer electronics, batteries and thermometers, according to the city’s website.
What they're saying
Council member Katie Cunningham asked Rowe if construction debris from do-it-yourself projects can be included in brush and bulk pickup, or if she'll have to cart it somewhere else.
If the material stays "clean," Waste Connections will be able to include that material in its pickup, Rowe said.
"If it's tied up and it's funneled and no nails are sticking out of it, we're [going to] be able to take it. If you got nails sticking out of it and it's thrown in a big pile with sheetrock and insulation, we're not [going to] take it," Rowe said.
Next steps
Republic Services will continue to service Cibolo until July 25. New residential cart delivery will also include an informational flyer with a trash collection day reminder and a citywide collection map, according to the city’s website.
