Universal City Council member Ashton Bulman announced her resignation, effective immediately May 6.

What we know

Bulman was first elected to the dais in May 2023 and was reelected to serve another three-year term on May 3, according to unofficial election results previously reported by Community Impact.

The office of mayor or a council member becomes vacant upon the death, resignation, recall or removal from office in any manner authorized by law or forfeiture of office. When a vacancy occurs on the dais, the remaining remembers will appoint a qualified person to fill the unexpired term within 30 days, according to the city's charter.

City Manager Kim Turner told Community Impact that the city will confer with its legal counsel to see what the next steps are or what the next steps should be.

What happened?

Bulman said the city was "a clique with cruel people."

"They attack anyone whose different, they make up lies, spread rumors and treat people who are different horribly. It is impossible to be heard, they bully to get their way and say I'm a jerk because I believe in less spending and transparency for people," Bulman said. "I hope one day I live in a [Universal City] that opens its arms to anyone and everyone feels like they're represented. However, right now, that's not possible, so I resign effectively now."

Turner said she had no comment on Bulman's accusations against other city officials.

Mayor Tom Maxwell accepted Bulman's resignation.
