Fair Oaks Ranch moves forward with SAWS emergency line extension project

A bid for the project was awarded to RL Jones LP, a San Antonio-based general contractor, for $287,453. The project budget was $382,340.

Alongside city funding for the project, the owners of the Cinco De Mayo restaurant will contribute $50,000 towards the extension.

The restaurant developer is contributing due to the city fire code requirement to upsize the restaurant's water mains. By tying into the city project, the duplication of water lines can be avoided, being mutually beneficial to the city and the restaurant, according to the meeting agenda.

In December, City Council approved an agreement with SAWS, including the following terms:

• SAWS retains priority to serve its existing customers
• Activation can only be made by SAWS personnel upon the city’s request
• Use is restricted to domestic indoor essential use only
• Each activation is limited to 30 consecutive days unless SAWS approves an extension
• Certified annual testing of all backflow prevention assemblies is required by the city
• Term of 10 years, with termination rights for either party
• Includes standard protections found in utility contracts

City staff said the project is expected to take around 71 days to complete from the start of construction.
