Selma elected officials have the option to receive a phone allowance as of Nov. 1.

The details

On Nov. 14, City Council ratified an ordinance allowing the mayor and City Council to receive a cell phone allowance of $80 per month.

Should the mayor and all five council members accept the allowance, the city would pay an estimated $5,760 annually. This allowance is in line with the allotment for city staff.

The background

City Council on Sept. 12 approved the allowance to support city officials who use cell phones for city-related business.

During this discussion, council member Jim Parma said he wanted the option to opt out of the program since some council members may not need the allotment.

During the meeting, Mayor Tom Daly said city officials do not get compensated for their time, and the expense would support officials for time spent serving the community.

“We don’t ask much of the city, we don’t ask much from the city,” Daly said. “But we give a lot of our time, and we give a lot of our effort to the city.”
