A new firm has been selected for architecture and engineering services for the design and construction of Schertz Fire Station No. 4.

Schertz City Council on Nov. 12 approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to enter an agreement with Martinez Architects.

Some context

City Council approved a similar contract with Eikon in September 2023, and the project was underway through July.

Fire Chief Greg Rogers said during the process, two architects were let go by the company, and another nearby project was turned over to a third party.

With these circumstances, city staff decided to terminate the contract with Eikon, which was terminated in August.

Rogers said around 85% of schematic design documents were completed at the time of termination, and the new design firm should be able to complete those documents.

“We felt it more important to protect the major portion of the $10 million project and give up a little bit of time to make sure the project was a good one,” he said.

Breaking it down

Under the previous contract with Eikon, the amount payable under the agreement was 9.25% of construction costs, which were estimated at $10 million, according to agenda documents. The total amount spent with Eikon prior to termination was $121,887.

The amount payable under the agreement with Martinez Architecture will be 8.85% of construction costs, which are still estimated at $10 million.

The project is funded through 2022 general obligation bonds, which allocated $12 million to the construction of the new fire station.
