The city of Universal City was recognized by the Texas Water Utilities Association for having the best tasting drinking water in the groundwater category. City staff celebrated the award during the Nov. 6 City Council meeting.

The overview

Assistant Public Works Director Brandon Peterson said there are six regions in the state that compete for the award, with Universal City representing the Armadillo Region, covering Bexar, Guadalupe and Comal counties.

Qualifications to participate in the competition include not having any violations from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within the last year, and having a treatment facility.

Like other surrounding water providers, Universal City pulls water from the Edwards Aquifer, then treats it at the city facility. Peterson said the water in Universal City is treated with fluoride.

City Manager Kim Turner said while each water distributor pulls from the Edwards Aquifer, the different shelf formations in the region could cause differences in water quality.

Turner said the award is an indication of the work city staff does to ensure high-quality water and services to Universal City residents.

What else?

This is not the first time the city of Universal City has been recognized for having high-quality water, having won a similar award in 2020, Public Works Director Randy Leunsmann said.

The city has also place second in the national water quality competition hosted by American Water Works Association in 2015.
