Benjamin Guerrero leads the total votes in the Schertz runoff election for City Council Place 4, according to unofficial results from Guadalupe County.
Following the special election on Dec. 14, Benjamin Guerrero and Tim Dusek moved forward to a runoff election, determining which candidate would fill the place 4 vacancy.
The breakdown
Results show Guerrero leading with 51% of votes, while Dusek received the remaining 49% votes. Guerrero leads unofficial totals with 459 votes, and Dusek follows with 441.
A total of 900 people voted in the Jan. 18 election, with 518 voting during the early voting period and 178 voting on election day. The remaining 204 ballots were absentee ballots, according to the results released by Guadalupe County.
According to preliminary voter reconciliation documents, a total of 2,145 voters submitted ballots, and 1,242 ballots are pending review, pending voter action or were rejected.
While voter reconciliation is typical in elections, should any pending ballots be counted by the time results are canvassed, it could result in a change in which candidate received the most votes.
As of the Jan. 18 results, Guerrero is on track to serve as the next council member.
How we got here
Following the resignation of Tiffany Gibson in September, a special election was called on Dec. 14 to fill the Place 4 seat.
Out of five candidates, Dusek and Guerrero received the highest number of votes, receiving 28.99% and 22.38% respectively.
Due to neither candidate receiving more than 50% of votes during the Dec. 14 election, a runoff was required by the Schertz City Charter.
All results unofficial until canvassed.
