Judson ISD and University Health are expanding access to health care for the east side of San Antonio with the opening of two new facilities.

Officials celebrated the opening of a new health center and wraparound clinic Sept. 5.

The details

The Judson Health Center at Wagner High School—which offers primary health care services to district staff, students and families—is University Health's seventh school-based health center, according to a news release.

The Judson Health Center will better help serve communities on the east side of San Antonio, along with the hospital systems other clinics, University Health President and CEO Ed Banos told Community Impact.

The health center offers a broad range of health care services related to cough, congestion and runny nose, along with annual checkups for children and adults. The Judson Health Center also provides sports physicals, said Leo Lopez III, University Health's chief community and population health officer.

"We also manage chronic disease, like high blood pressure and diabetes and we certainly do provide immunizations as well," Lopez added.

The district is also offering counseling services for students and families with its wraparound service center and the help of 12 outside contractors.

The wraparound center—coupled with the health center—will serve as a "one-stop shop" for JISD students and staff, said Monica Garcia, executive director of student and family support services.

The wraparound center has a music room, a sensory room, a calming room and an art room, along with office space. Before the building's official opening, the clinic had successfully served 760 JISD students, Garcia said.

"We look forward to many more years of serving Judson ISD students and staff at the wraparound service center," Garcia said.

What they're saying

JISD board President Monica Ryan thanked Superintendent Milton "Rob" Fields III, campus administration and the staff and counselors working in the student and family support services department.

"Your commitment to the mental health and social-emotional wellbeing of our students, families and staff on every campus, every day, is what makes Judson ISD so special, because we are family, and families take care of each other," Ryan said. "I am so excited for what the future holds for these facilities, and the amazing, lasting impact it'll have on our entire Judson ISD community."
