In an ongoing series of district long-term planning presentations, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD board of trustees on Nov. 21 discussed fine arts funding needs.

Meeting highlights

Fine Arts Director Beth Bronk gave a presentation covering the needs of the fine arts department at each campus.

During the presentation, Bronk said 74% of students are currently receiving fine arts instruction from fine arts staff, and 55% of students in grades 7-12 are currently enrolled in a fine arts class.

Items listed as needs for high schools included replacement instruments, improved lighting in auditoriums, marching band equipment trailers and other fine arts quality of life improvements.

“Neither one of our high schools have a tower for marching band practice,” she said.

For Clemens High School, Bronk said that around 75% of the instruments used are 12-54 years old, while the typical instrument life cycle is around 10-12 years. Bronk said 54% of those instruments are in fair or poor condition.

Steele High School has similar needs with around 60% of the instruments being in fair or poor condition, and 61% being 12-20 years old.

The cost

Overall costs for fine arts program needs at each campus is as follows:
  • Clemens High School: $1.58 million
  • Steele High School: $1.69 million
  • Corbett Junior High: $334,400
  • Dobie Junior High: $396,800
  • Intermediate schools: $476,000
  • Elementary schools: $176,000
The combined costs of all projects would be around $4.66 million. These costs do not include space expansions.

Bronk said meeting the space needs for the fine arts programs would likely cost tens of millions of dollars.

The item was on the agenda as a discussion only, and the board of trustees will continue to receive presentations from district departments covering long-term planning needs.
