The Judson ISD board of trustees on Dec. 15 approved the rankings for the selection of an architectural firm to complete the design of the new elementary school, which will be located in Selma.

The design services will have an estimated cost of $5,662,260, which will be funded through the bond passed in November. This cost is estimated based on the $62.9 million that was approved by voters in the bond package.

District 4 Trustee José Macias raised a concern regarding the overall estimated cost of the elementary school.

Macias compared the cost to an elementary school that was recently completed in Boerne ISD that had an estimated cost of $38 million.

“I’m hoping that we don’t have to spend $62 million on an elementary school and that we can negotiate,” he said.

Facilities Planning Assistant Director Helen Keaton explained the $62 million would cover the total cost of the new school.

“That is furniture, equipment, technology equipment, every single thing,” she said. “So, when you are seeing a school built with a construction cost of $30 million, that is construction cost. That is not [the] total dollar amount for Boerne ISD for their elementary school.”

With the board approval of the rankings, JISD staff will begin negotiations with the architectural firms.
