Northeast Lakeview College on Nov. 10 celebrated the groundbreaking of a new Veterans Center within the Alamo Colleges District.

This approximately 11,000-square-foot building is funded through the State of Texas appropriations that were provided to the Alamo Colleges for the 2022-23 biennium. The project was awarded $7.7 million.

Northeast Lakeview College President Veronica Garcia opened the ceremony with comments focusing on the benefits for military-affiliated families.

“It will be a standalone facility, which will provide specific services and support for our veteran students and our military-affiliated families,” Garcia said.

According to information shared by Northeast Lakeview College officials, some of the enhancements for the new facility include:

  • increasing veteran-specific orientations, academic and nonacademic programming;

  • enhancing career planning, training, job assistance search and transitional services;

  • re-establishing a veteran mentoring program that matches incoming veterans with current students to support the transition process from military life to academia;

  • incorporating private meeting spaces to discuss confidential matters, such as disability claims, benefits, veteran-specific advocacy, and emergency services and legal services; and

  • offering community space to host organizations and other events that support veterans, such as faculty support in the classroom, military culture and learning styles.
