Universal City City Council on Dec. 6 discussed an ordinance to remove official yield intersections and establish official full stop sign locations at certain street intersections within the city.

While many of the stop signs to be added in the city are in relation to three upcoming subdivisions—Lavonne Villa, Orchard Park and Cibolo Crossing—council discussed the replacement of the yield sign at the intersection of Kitty Hawk Road and Sunrise Canyon Drive.

City Manager Kim Turner said the change will help with traffic regulation as the area grows more due to the incoming development.

“With the additional traffic coming through there, we think it is more prudent to make a stop sign,” Turner said.

Turner said the change will also give the police department the ability to enforce traffic violations in that area more effectively, and the police department is on board with the change.

According to Turner, the city follows the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices to determine when to use a stop sign over a yield sign.

Public Works Director Randy Luensmann said the stop sign will also help control traffic for emergency services going through the area.

“When we make that thoroughfare for emergency services through the creek, we are going to want that traffic to stop when fire and police have to make emergency calls to the ETJ area,” Luensmann said.

Council unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance, which will be back for a second reading at a future meeting.
