On Feb. 10, VIA Metropolitan Transit launched new fare boxes across its bus fleet, which now offer a “tap to pay” feature.

What you need to know

According to a news release, using the new fare boxes, passengers can now pay using Apple, Google or Samsung mobile wallets, along with contactless debit and credit cards.

The implementation of the new payment system is projected to speed up boardings, reduce delays and improve the overall customer experience.

VIA’s fares remain at $1.30 per trip, with discounted fares continuing to apply for those who qualify by showing their VIA Reduced Fare ID upon boarding. Cash will continue to be accepted. Additionally, passengers can still use VIA’s goMobile+ app, the Transit app or a goCard to pay their fare.

The background

VIA began installing the new fare boxes in November and completed the project in mid-January, according to a news release.

This update also includes the launch of VIA’s new goCard Lite smartcard, which will replace the previous preloaded magnetic strip e-cards.

Passengers can purchase or exchange fare cards for a new goCard Lite smartcard at any VIA customer service ticket windows. Additionally, preloaded goCard Lite smartcards are also available for purchase at most H-E-B locations.
