San Antonio city officials and consulting engineers gathered Dec. 14 at Christ Community Church to provide a public preview of planned traffic and mobility improvements in the Stone Oak area.
The background
City staffers are preplanning to implement $5 million in road and pedestrian upgrades funded by San Antonio’s 2022 voter-approved bond.
Turn lanes as well as new curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, drainage and fixes are planned at the Stone Oak Parkway and Evans Road intersection, Stone Oak Parkway and Hardy Oak Boulevard, and on Evans Road from Peacemaker Street to Bush Middle School, according to local officials.
Project plans call for reconfiguring lanes at southbound Hardy Oak and Stone Oak Parkway as well as signal improvements and new curbing and sidewalk to alleviate heavy traffic congestion at southbound Hardy Oak and Stone Oak Parkway. Similar improvements are planned at eastbound Stone Oak Parkway and Evans.
Digging deeper
Limited sight distance and speeding concerns on Evans near Bush Middle School prompted the city to plan for a variety of fixes in the immediate area.
A new traffic signal will be installed at Evans and Peacemaker, allowing safer entries and exits at the nearby Saddle Mountain neighborhood and Mission Hills apartment complex.
Additionally, new pedestrian crossings and two synchronized signals will be placed at the campus driveways to improve the school crossing at Evans and Peacemaker, and upgrade the traffic flow during school peak hours.
City representatives also said they will modify the median at the intersection of Evans and Stone Saddle, and provide a turnaround near the Christ Community Church, with both measures aimed at reducing the risk of auto collisions.
According to city representatives, 31 car accidents were reported in the Evans/Peacemaker/Bush Middle School area between 2018 and 2022.
City officials said designs for the entire project are 70% complete, and construction will be scheduled from summer 2025 to the end of 2026.
