Local engineers consulting on Shavano Park’s voter-approved $10 million bond told City Council on Nov. 28 that their designs for the planned street and cul-de-sac improvements are 90% completed.

KFW Engineers and Surveying Vice President Chris Otto said his firm is on schedule to fully finish designs for an initial phase of bond-funded road upgrades by the end of this year.

Shavano Park voters approved the bond issue in last May’s general elections. Local officials said the bond sale proceeds will help to support much-needed repairs to 14 older roads and cul-de-sacs east and west of Northwest Military Highway.

Otto said it will cost an estimated $10.2 million to cover the fixes, which range from complete reconstruction of nine streets east of Northwest Military, rebuilding of four cul-de-sacs west of Northwest Military, and repaving of the Post Oak Way entrance at Lockhill-Selma Road.

Otto said KFW and city representatives have done everything possible to pare down preliminary costs.

“We’ve reduced the contingency [percentage], but accounted for everything else we planned for,” Otto said.

Additionally, designs for planned improvements along Shavano Park’s portion of DeZavala Road were on track for 60% completion by Nov. 30, Otto said.

City officials have said they are using the same $10 million voter-approved bond to leverage federal money to fund upgrades on DeZavala, including improved drainage, bicycle lanes and sidewalks. Otto said Shavano Park’s project will not affect fixes that the city of San Antonio previously applied to its segment of DeZavala.

“What [improvements] that San Antonio constructed on DeZavala, we’ll leave on place and start from there,” Otto said.
