San Antonio ISD will discuss a proposal to sell or exchange its unimproved property on Camaron Street for a potential new baseball stadium for the San Antonio Missions on Nov. 18.

The gist

The proposal is in response to Missions’ ownership’s request to purchase and use the SAISD property as a prospective stadium site.

“As the Nov. 18 board meeting approaches, the district looks forward to discussing potential paths forward that align with its commitment to quality education, community well-being and strategic growth,” said SAISD Board President Christina Martinez.

The board will consider a proposed staff recommendation that includes securing parking for SAISD vehicles, funds for new construction and affordable housing.

Staff recommendations include:
  • Appointing the SAISD superintendent to a seat on the Houston Street Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone
  • Funding the construction of the Advanced Learning Academy
  • Providing necessary parking with safe passage to the Fox Tech campus
  • Provide $400,000 per year to compensate for the loss of interest if SAISD was to have sold the property through a sealed bid process
  • Guaranteed affordable housing in SAISD attendance zones

SAISD officials will also consider pursuing a sealed bid process to sell district property and pursuing eminent domain for the ALA expansion.

Next steps

The SAISD board of trustees will vote on the recommendation and will authorize the superintendent to formally notify parties involved Nov. 18.
