San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department on May 11 announced the 2022 summer outdoor pool pre-season schedule with the opening of eight city public pools starting May 21.

According to a news release, with triple-digit high temperatures arriving early this year, the preseason pool sites have increased from four pool locations to eight pool locations across the city to give residents citywide more opportunities to beat the heat.

The following pools will be open for free use 1-7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays:

  • Cassiano Pool, 1440 S. Zarzamora St.

  • Dellview Pool, 500 Basswood Drive

  • Fairchild Pool, 1214 E. Crockett St.

  • Kingsborough Pool, 350 Felps St.

  • Lady Bird Johnson Pool, 10700 Nacogdoches Road

  • Spring Time Pool, 6571 Spring Time Drive

  • Southside Lions Pool, 3100 Hiawatha St.

  • Westwood Pool, 7627 W. Military Drive

Additionally, the parks and recreation department is partnering with North East ISD to offer community swim days on Mondays and Saturdays this summer at the NEISD Sports Park, 12001 Wetmore Road.

The sports park pool will be open to the public for free use 1-3:30 p.m. Mondays from June 6 through July 25 except for June 27 and July 4, the release said. The sports park pool will also be open noon-4 p.m. June 11 and July 9 and 23.

The San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., a public indoor pool facility, continues to welcome swimmers for open swim, lap swim and fitness classes with preregistration, the release said.

City officials said the parks and recreation department continues to recruit summer aquatics staff and is offering a hiring incentive of up to $700, training and certification. The incentive is open to new and returning aquatics staff.

Shanea Allen, parks and recreation manager for aquatics, said there is an industrywide shortage of lifeguards available for municipal facilities.

“We’re implementing creative hiring strategies like hiring incentives and starting our lifeguards early to keep them engaged and working sooner in the pool season. We’re also actively recruiting at schools and events, which we couldn’t do last year,” Allen said. “Due to these efforts, we’re able to expand preseason pool sites to offer more swimming opportunities in more neighborhoods than in previous years."

According to the release, lifeguard classes continue throughout May. For details, please call the San Antonio Natatorium at 210-207-3299.

Residents may also turn to splash pads for cool relief, the city said. Since March, five splash pads have been open to the public with the newest splash pad opening in April at MLK Park. The following splash pads will remain open for free from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily through Oct. 31:
