At least two San Antonio animal shelters and pet welfare groups say they need additional temporary pet foster parents to assist with care for animals in their care this holiday season.
San Antonio-area group God’s Dog Rescue said it needs more temporary fosters to help with some of the 600 dogs in the organization’s care, double the group’s capacity of outdoor kennels.
Representatives said the assistance is especially needed between now and the end of the year, when frigid temperatures are forecasted to hit the region during Christmas weekend.
GDR said fosters can choose between adult dogs and puppies and will only need to house them until temperatures warm back up.
The nonprofit group will supply fosters with essentials to ensure the foster dog has a warm home. People interested in fostering may apply here.
San Antonio Animal Care Services said Dec. 22 it has more than 50 pets, mostly dogs, in urgent need of temporary housing with foster volunteers through the end of the year.
SAACS Foster Supervisor Justine Sanchez said the shelter typically houses and cares for more than 200 dogs and cats daily.
“Pets in need are brought in around the clock, seven days a week. Without foster volunteers, many of these pets would not make it out of the shelter and into loving homes, Sanchez said.
SAACS said its foster program provides families or individual volunteers with all the resources they need to foster pets in need, such as food, veterinary care, and supplies. Residents directly help pets who may have been abandoned or left to fend for themselves in the cold by fostering a pet in need.
At this time, both temporary and long-term foster volunteers are needed. Animal lovers who want to help should submit a foster application by visiting the SAACS website.
