In a move to create better access to green energies, the Bexar County Commissioners Court voted to approve a contract with Build San Antonio Green to implement energy and emissions reduction policies May 13.

The overview

According to county documents, BSAG will partner with Solar San Antonio to develop policies for air quality improvements, water conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy through the development and administration of the green building program.

BSAG is a nonprofit that promotes conservation and efficiency by certifying projects, which meet the program's specifications. Building projects are certified under the BSAG program through a quality review process, which includes options for new constructions and retrofitted single-family homes. Additionally, the nonprofit also holds multiple outreach and education workshops to educate the wider community on how to make their homes more energy efficient.

According to the agreement, BSAG will certify approximately 1,000 projects in its new construction and retrofit programs, and hold four workshops over the FY 2024-25 period.

Bring Solar Home is a program that connects customers with solar installers, provides information related to solar options, rebates and incentives; and assesses if their home qualifies for Solar Options.

The agreement uses $75,000 from the county’s general fund to provide services from Oct. 1, 2024-Sept. 30, 2025.

The backstory

BSAG is a nonprofit organization created by Bexar County, CPS Energy and the City of San Antonio.

To date, the program has certified over 29,000 green projects, including 29,080 single family new construction homes, 58 single family retrofit projects, 17 multifamily and mixed-use projects and six commercial buildings. These projects have prevented approximately 525 million pounds of CO2 being released, which equals taking over 43,000 cars off of the road for one year.
