The details
Though the San Antonio Missions ownership, Designated Bidders, and the City have agreed to the memorandum of understanding for the construction and development of a downtown Missions ballpark, Nelson W. Wolff Stadium will continue to be the team’s stadium until opening day in April 2028.
Due to stadium requirements set by Major League Baseball, Wolff Stadium needed a set of improvements ahead of the 2025 season. This included improvements to the visiting locker room and dugout.
The total costs of these improvements was roughly $368,755. The ordinance approved a 70% reimbursement to the baseball club, totaling $258,129.
Prior to these improvements, Wolff Stadium received a series of improvements in 2023, including draining and irrigation enhancements, field renovations, landscaping, security, sod and umpire dressing room improvements as well as the addition of parking lot gates.
The backstory
According to city documents, City Council authorized the Baseball Stadium Facility Lease Agreement with the San Antonio Missions Baseball Club in 2006, with an initial term of 10 years with three five year renewal options.
In 2017, city council authorized the first amendment, which extended the agreement to Sept. 30, 2021, with two remaining five year renewal options. As part of the agreement’s extension, the city and the Missions agreed to develop a Stadium Improvement Plan.
In the improvement plan, the Missions are responsible for 30% of improvement costs and the city is responsible for 70% of the costs.
The improvements were completed ahead of the opening home game on April 4,2025.
