The overview
Coyle’s presentation touched upon three aspects that demonstrate SA Airport’s growth. These include the number of direct flights to and from San Antonio, number of flights to Mexico and year-over-year capacity changes.
According to Coyle, SA Airport currently has up to 45 nonstop flights, including eight international flights.
New nonstop services include:
- Beginning Nov. 11: Delta Airlines nonstop flight to Boston
- Beginning Nov. 12: Volaris Airlines nonstop flight to Monterrey
- Beginning Dec. 2: Viva Airlines nonstop flight to Guadalajara
- TBD: American Airlines nonstop flight to Reagan National Airport
Lastly, SA Airport’s year-over-year capacity, or the number of passengers flying out of San Antonio, has increased by 6.4%, making it the ninth most active medium hub airport in the US, and one of two Texas airports that has exceeded 2019 passenger levels.“San Antonio’s year-over-year capacity is only second to DFW,” Coyle said.
Marking a milestone
Coyle also noted that SA Airport has narrowed the ticket price gap between Austin and San Antonio. In 2020, the price gap was roughly $40 in favor of Austin, but as of 2024, the price gap has narrowed to $2.
“The big thing we often hear when people compare us to Austin is that it is cheaper to fly out of Austin, that the fares that [passengers] pay make it worth driving up the road. [City officials] and the data would argue that this is no longer the case,” Coyle said.
