San Antonio officials will brief City Council on Oct. 16 about progress on developing a framework for housing availability and affordability along VIA Metropolitan Transit routes, including the Green and Silver lines of the Advanced Rapid Transit network currently under development.

The backstory

In 2020, San Antonio voters approved dedicated funding for transit projects, including advanced rapid transit. The Green Line, a north-south corridor, and the Silver Line, a west-east corridor, will use existing VIA bus routes filled with multiple pickup/dropoff platforms and fare kiosks.

The gist

At issue is how to expand upon current work on transit-oriented districts—where the transit-focused zoning is currently allowed within a half-mile of a bus stop—into a transit-oriented policy that incorporates whole neighborhood areas into consideration of access to public transit, according to city documents.

The revisions also incorporate protections for existing residential neighborhoods with proposed boundaries that would still allow for transit-oriented development, according to the documents.

Stay tuned

The briefing will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at City Hall, 100 Military Plaza, San Antonio. Residents can tune in through the SA Speak Up city website.
