San Antonio City Council approved an agreement with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to provide dental treatment for children referred by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s Oral Health program during its Sept. 19 meeting.

The gist

The agreement is part of the Metropolitan Health District Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant Dental Services, which facilitates dental treatment for underprivileged children ages 6 months to 17 years old. Applicants must not qualify for Medicaid or CHIP and not have any other means of accessing dental care.

According to city documents, the agreement approves a contract with the School of Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio for an amount up to $225,580 and will be effective from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 2025.

Some context

The agreement with the School of Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio is also a part of Metropolitan Health District Oral Health Program that provides preventative care for approximately 20,000 children annually and assistance for participating families to establish routine dental care, including treatment for untreated tooth decay.

Other programs include four Head Start and Early Head Start Oral Health services, which provide limited oral evaluations, fluoride varnish and oral health education; and Miles of Smiles, which provides limited oral evaluations, fluoride and sealants at participating elementary schools.
