San Antonio City Council approved the collective bargaining agreement between the city and the Local 624 San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association during its Sept. 19 meeting, making San Antonio firefighters among the best paid in Texas.

The overview

According to city documents, a tentative agreement with the firefighter's union was reached on Aug. 23 after 12 negotiation sessions held between March 29-Aug. 23. 76% of firefighters voted on ratification, with 97.43% voting to ratify the agreement.

Agreement details:
  • A three-year agreement effective from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2027
  • Provides a 20% base wage increase over three years
  • Reallocates certain certification pay to base wages, which compounds in future years
  • Provides more accountability in the city’s sick leave process
  • Offers a more robust parental leave benefit
  • Paves the way for discussions regarding more efficient and modern applicant processing and enhanced promotion processes


Additionally, the agreement maintains the escalator that increases premiums paid by paying firefighters by 10% each year.
