The city of San Antonio will hold a public forum May 30 at the Coker Methodist Church gym where residents can discuss the city’s bicycle network plan.

The gist

According to a news release, local residents are encouraged to learn more about the plan, which local officials said is designed to guide, prioritize and fund a network of safe bicycle spaces within San Antonio city limits.

Attendees of the meeting will be able to design their ideal bike lanes, map out their preferred bike routes and share their insights and suggestions on local biking infrastructure.

Local officials said more than 400 additional miles of bike facilities have been built in San Antonio—or nearly 16 new miles a year—since 2000.

Put in perspective

City representatives said development of San Antonio’s bike network plan is currently in a third phase of public input collection, involving the highlighting of key connection points between existing and future bike riders and their destinations.

The recently upgraded bike network plan website contains additional resources, including an “about” section detailing plan goals and processes, and an “updates” tab featuring a San Antonio bike facilities map that is regularly updated.

According to city officials, the bike network plan is just one more tool that can help make parts of town safer for bicyclists and encourage residents to take up and further enjoy cycling as a means of exercise and transportation for work, school, running errands or socializing. The city marked May 17, 2024 as Bike to Work Day.
