Hill Country Village officials said they seek to have a local company set up a monument/pillar at every city entrance point to better welcome residents and visitors.
The background
City Council on Nov. 16 received a presentation from representatives of Boulder Designs by RiverCity Stone Craft about the firm’s proposal to build and install monuments at each city entry except at US 281 and Winding Way. The project is to cost no more than $40,000, local leaders said.
Boulder Designs custom crafts various types of sign and street address boulders. City officials said Boulder Designs’ proposal calls for constructing and erecting seven custom stone columns, each measuring 2 feet by 2 feet by 6 feet.
Each column would be placed on a concrete footing measuring 3 feet by 3 feet by 6 feet. According to company representatives, designing, building and installing the pillars would cost the city $38,970, excluding irrigation, landscaping, materials testing and city permit fees. Company representatives added the monument could serve as wayfinding signs for residents and visitors.
What they’re saying
While residents and council members said they generally liked the idea of erecting stone city entry columns, some council meeting attendees said there should be more community feedback on potential signage designs before the city commits to such a project.
Council member Thomas Doyle suggested getting remarks from the Hill Country Village Homeowners Association on the proposal.
“The idea is to have something that we could be proud of,” Doyle said of the proposed signs.
Other residents urged the city to collect feedback on aesthetics and functions of Hill Country Village’s entrances.
“I think we need more discussion on these designs,” Mayor Gabriel Durand-Hollis said.
